How Olivscent Supports Syrian Refugees in Turkey and Makes a Social Impact
Back in March 2011, when a war broke out in Syria, millions of Syrians began fleeing their homeland, with the majority seeking refuge in neighboring Turkey. This mass displacement has led to one of the largest humanitarian crises of our time, with countless families facing uncertainty and hardship. In 2020, just before the Covid-19 pandemic emerged, the concept of Olivscent was born. The idea stemmed from a deep-seated need to support Syrian refugees in Turkey who were producing a product with a rich history dating back at least 1,300 years: Aleppo soap.
Witnessing these skilled artisans preserving their cultural heritage under such challenging living conditions was nothing short of inspiring. Their dedication to craftsmanship and their ability to create beauty from adversity motivated us to offer our support. However, as the world grappled with the pandemic, our plans had to be put on hold until the situation became clearer.
In the summer of 2023, Olivscent was finally launched, and we began introducing our products with a mission that transcends mere commerce. Our goal is to bridge the gap between Western and Syrian cultures, both of which boast rich histories and diverse ethnic backgrounds. We aim to shift the narrative surrounding Syria from the often negative portrayals seen in the media to a more nuanced and personal perspective. By highlighting the stories of the artisans behind Aleppo soap, we hope to foster understanding and appreciation for their craft and culture.
At Olivscent, our mission is not just about selling soap; it’s about supporting Syrian professionals in Turkey who are now facing even greater uncertainty. We provide employment opportunities by tailoring orders to meet customer needs, which involves a collaborative process that engages up to eight individuals. This process spans from the soap-making in the factory to the creation of sustainable packaging by skilled artisans, many of whom are refugee women striving to support their families. By empowering these women, we are not only helping them gain financial independence but also enabling them to reclaim their identities and contribute to their communities.
Our commitment to social impact extends beyond employment. We are dedicated to using sustainable practices in every aspect of our business. From sourcing natural ingredients for our soaps to utilising eco-friendly packaging, we strive to minimize our environmental footprint while maximizing our positive impact on society. Each bar of Olivscent soap tells a story—not just of craftsmanship, but of resilience, hope, and the enduring spirit of the Syrian people. While our impact is still growing, we are actively seeking partnerships with boutique luxury hotels, major events, gift shops, and retailers that champion social causes and sustainable products.
